Octreotide

A somatostatin analogue, a hormone that acts on the pituitary gland. Given by injection, octreotide is used mainly in the treatment of acromegaly and hormone-secreting intestinal tumours. Octreotide is also used to prevent complications following pancreatic surgery. Side effects may include various gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and bloating, flatulence, and diarrhoea.
